MiCHWA CHW Curriculum

MiCHWA actively supports CHW education and training. A key piece of the CHW role is core competency training. In 2014, MiCHWA’s partners began the process of creating a core competency-based CHW training curriculum. Using the Minnesota CHW curriculum as a base, MiCHWA partners created a Michigan-specific curriculum. This curriculum covers the following competencies:

  • Role, Advocacy and Outreach
  • Organization and Resources: Community and Personal Strategies
  • Teaching and Capacity Building
  • Legal and Ethical Responsibilities
  • Coordination, Documentation and Reporting
  • Communication Skills and Cultural Competence
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Mental Health

Training method and implementation varies by training site, including duration and days per week. Number of classroom instruction hours also varies. We suggest CHWs prepare to commit a minimum of 126 hours between classroom and out-of-class work.

Core Competency Objectives

Each competency module covers several objectives. You can download the core competencies and objectives here: MiCHWA Curriculum Objectives_2018. Successful completion of the curriculum does not currently result in college credit.

Certification

In October 2017, MiCHWA began recognizing CHWs eligible for certification, based on MiCHWA CHW Training and accomplishment in the eight MiCHWA CHW Core Competencies. MiCHWA is working with key stakeholders and state partners to identify processes and policies to move forward with CHW certification recognized by the State of Michigan. Please see the MiCHWA CHW Registry page for more information.
