MiCHWA and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), with funding through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), partner on a semi-annual survey of Michigan’s CHW programs and employers. The survey’s intent is to better understand the existing CHW employment environment, providing crucial data data to assist state and local officials, health and human service system representatives, and health and human service payer organizations in understanding the growing array of CHW activities statewide to shape our CHW policy and financing agenda in Michigan. All surveys were granted exempt from review status by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board.

Purpose of Survey & Methods
MiCHWA, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborated on an initial statewide survey for CHW employers in summer 2014. In July 2014, MiCHWA conducted this survey of employers and managers of CHWs to gain a better understanding of the work CHWs are doing in Michigan, how CHWs and their programs are funded, and what kind of data CHW programs currently collect. The survey was distributed online to program representatives, MiCHWA’s existing database, Web-based media, and mailing lists, and was open to all Michigan-based CHW programs.
The survey was designed to answer a number of questions:
- Where are CHWs in Michigan and who is employing them?
- What types of programs are CHWs working in currently?
- What types of funding mechanisms are currently supporting CHWs and their programs?
- What barriers do CHW programs have in reaching sustainability?
- What education do CHWs working in the field have?
- What additional training needs have employers identified for CHWs?
